What is NIPT?

NIPT (noninvasive prenatal testing), sometimes called NIPS (noninvasive prenatal screening), is a highly sensitive genetic test that screens for Down syndrome and certain other genetic abnormalities in a foetus. The test is available in a specialist centre and is performed within the first trimester of a pregnancy.

Please see the below FAQ for more information regarding NIPT.

What is involved with a NIPT test?
A NIPT test is performed by taking a simple blood sample test from the mother.

How long does it take to get the results from my NIPT test?
Test results are generally available within 5-10 business days.

How much is the NIPT screening test in Australia?
You may also need to pay for an appointment with your doctor to get a referral, as well as an ultrasound. Although costs have come down in Australia, since some companies are now able to analyse the results locally, you can still expect to pay between $400 and $1,000 for an NIPT.

What do I do if my NIPT test is positive?
If your NIPT test returns a positive result, your obstetrician might recommend additional diagnostic genetic testing.

Is the NIPT test covered by Medicare?
NO. NIPT tests are only done in private clinics and are not covered by Medicare.

Who should get a NIPT test done?
All expecting mothers should get a NIPT test done. This type of test is especially suitable for women who are at increased risk of having a baby with Down syndrome.

Is the NIPT test worth it?
The test is totally safe for the mother and baby. NIPT has a low false-positive rate of approximately 1 in 1,000. Advances in modern diagnostics have made it possible to discover potential abnormalities in the foetus. We recommend that all expecting mothers have this test done.

Is 10 weeks too early for NIPT?
NIPT may be offered to women who are at high risk of fetal chromosomal abnormalities as early as 10 weeks of gestation.
